The Game – LAX Review, Leak, & “My Life” Video

The below link is provided for information purposes only.

DMX yelling a prayer on Game’s behalf. If you’re familiar with DMX’s on-record prayers up to this point, you know how creepy this is.

A nice, piano-filled beat and a so-so chorus made weaker because of how common a style it is. The Game delivers some particularly weak verses on this one, basically negating his Mass Appeal interview’s claim that he’s the best alive. It’s a song like Scream on ‘Em from the last album that has a bangin beat but awful lyrics.

Ice Cube and Game hook up to try and worsen LA’s reputation. The beat again outshines Game’s verses, but not as much; it’s also worth noting that Ice Cube’s chorus is pretty great.

The first song truly worth listening to over and over, partially due to it’s hot beat, partially because Game and Raekwon bounce verses around with a chemistry like Rae and Ghost.

If Game would leaked this shit instead of Big Dreams, I would have been a lot more hyped for this shit.

I didn’t like this song much when it first dropped, mostly because Lil Wayne was on it, but it’s a banger in retrospect. The concept really makes you think, and even if Game’s verses are mostly Phantom and Bentley talk, you turn it off feeling slightly deeper, like you just stepped into a half-full kiddy pool.

Also, I promised the official video in the blog title, so here it is.

The opening lines tell you how good the song is going to be; he name-drops Kanye West, and then talks about Impalas and drug wars, followed by a bad joke about Mount Rushmore.

On the plus, the beat is fire, sounding like a cut track from Rick Ross’ debut.

Anyone hoping for a classic summer track for BBQ-ing to in the vein of Biggie’s “Juicy” or DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime,” as I was, will be sorely disappointed by another song about being a gangsta, completely with a shitty chorus uncreatively rhyming “california sunshine” with “in the summertime.”

This song starts off differently from any other Game song, with an odd techno pluck that suggests that Game’s about to get all innovative on your ass, but then this weak drum beat comes in and Game starts the gun talk. A wasted opportunity.

The most menacing beat Game has ever had (and that’s saying something) and more of his mediocre rhymes make this yet the second wasted opportunity in a row. The beat is so hot, though, that it makes me want to listen to this a few times more.

The worst song yet, a shitty faux-romantic song where Game’s idea of foreplay is “I know you brought your girls, So girl fuck your friends, Matter of fact, I wanna fuck your friends.”

Featuring the same girl who sung on Nas’ “Can’t Forget About You.” As with just about every Game song out there, Game’s lyrics are the same ol’ “Yo I’m hoppin’ out a Phantom with an iced-out medallion…” Blah Blah Blah “Chuck Taylors” Blah Blah Blah “dippin in my 6-4 Impala” Blah Blah Blah “[Reference to some 2Pac song].” The chorus is pretty great, though.

Another shitty faux-romantic song, except this one is even worse than the one with Ne-Yo (Gentleman’s Affair).

An elastic-funk kind of thing that usually works out well for guest Common, but this is a stumble for him. Game is on his usual “I’m not very good, but I’m not awful, either” tip lyrically. The chorus is the same as on all the other songs.

A Game song about rappers better than himself, except he does it creatively by recreating the deaths of 2Pac, Biggie, and Eazy-E, rapping as them (in the first-person) in their final moments. Eazy-E’s death is the most tragic, but the Biggie verse is the most entertaining, since it’s the part where Game does an imitation of Big Poppa’s voice.

You’ve probably heard it before, so you already know it’s not very good.

The white-hot summer banger I reported on earlier in the year. I loved it then, and I still do. If only “Cali Sunshine” were more like this.

I’d hate to spoil this song’s meaning, so I’m just going to suggest that you think really hard about who has the last name King that Game would want to pen a tribute to. This is a pretty good song, but nothing great. Hilariously, Game upstages Nas.

L.A.X. is on par with everything else Game has ever done, in that it’s a collection of white-hot beats with Game’s mediocre all-but-legendary flows coasting along.

Great review, I thought the same about the album, Didn’t like it, I heard his going to release all the tracks that didn’t make it into a mixtape coming shortly after the album.

PS: Big dreams was actually good, it was a very good hype and the gangsta beat that a HYPE needs like “one blood” which got Doctor’s Advocate pumping.

No doubt I respect your reviews. Blunt and honest, even though I might not agree I can see where you are coming from. Props. I got to listen to it sometime soon. But I view Game as I do Wayne. Flow wise they are great. In order to sale and make records worth listening to you got to be able to flow. Lyrically they have their moments and with the right production a banging album can be the result. Entertainment is what we are looking for. And usually artist like Game do that on the retail albums.

You killed me with the let us live review.

I have been an fan of Game for along time, but i’m really disapointed in L.A.X. I know that Game can do much better then this. On the album are alot of Anyoing beats, and i can’t hear if the Game is from the West side. I mean compaire the songs with Body bags, One blood, The documentry ( the song not the album ), Hate it or love it. I thought was spitting fire…but i really i’m disaponted in L.A.X

“throws an Red bandana at Game’s grave’

I agree, although I wouldn’t say he’s spit much fire off of the mixtape circuit, but the LAX lyrics were particularly weak.

L.A.X. was on point, if you thought Game’s lyrics were bad on this his lyrics on Documentary must’ve been god-awful for you niggas. He stepped it up lyrically, production wise this is better than DA and the latter half of TD (minus Runnin). Only thing I’ll complain about is content. Its repetitive.

But apart from that Game delivers some nice songs.

This review is inaccurate. I’ve heard the whole album and can honestly say that it is solid as a rock. Any doubts? Go to Amazon and check out the samples.
    What now.

Do you even like Game? Every chance you get, you shit all over his lyrical ability. Sure, he’s no Common, Talib or Lupe, but a lot of his words still make you think.

The only thing worse than G-Unit stans is Game stans. lol

I used to like him, but after seeing how in every single photo shoot ever he does this retarded glare thing with his face, I started realizing “Wow, this guy’s almost as big a douche bag as 50.”

He stopped doing it in recent interviews, though, so I expected a good album.

  17. August 27, 2008 at 4:22 am

alright 1st off this album is unlike anything released this year. its got its own sense creativity to it. and you cant sit there and honestly say that games lyrics have not improved dramatically and this is possibly his best album yet.. idk why you are hatin on the game for? haha he’s what’s hot right now.. don’t deny it come on!? maybe because the game wasn’t made for this time era of hip hop or maybe cus you cant relate or understand him? maybe he’s too complex for you simple minded ppl

I laughed so hard at you calling Game complex my brain began hemorrhaging. So, as I lay here slowly dying, I leave you with a final “fuck you!”

I think you’re completely wrong and that this album is the realest thing hardcore rap has seen since 2001, maybe you just like 50’s TOS or something.. I don’t really know. What I do know is that I can listen to this album the whole way through no problems. Definitely outshines Tha Carter 3 and anything else that’s come out this year(although Rick Ross’ Trilla was fire in my opinion). To the haters, THE GAME IS BACK.

Damn you wack. I see you hate it when people disagree with you. Gotta respond to every negative response huh? Just like a fag. Don’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot do ya?

  23. August 27, 2008 at 5:26 pm

littleoneonline… i just wanna make a couple things clear. out of all 16 tracks game spits on, the only thing you seemed to hear was phantoms, iced out chains, and 64 impalas? you must have selective hearing because i bet as soon as you heard that you were probably like, “man this is all he raps about.” lame. you were probably waitin for him to say shit like that just so you could HATE!!! hip hop being the way it is right now you seem like the type that would shoot down anyone who tries and revives it! his songs are deep and have meaning… i hear a lot of criticism coming from you so if you don’t like what’s out on the shelves right now, why don’t you put out an album… and we’ll see how that goes…. fuckin punk. haha fuck you! oh yea and that “letter to the king” hits hard!!! haha soak it up!!

You obviously didn’t read my review of TOS, then! lol

(To save you the small effort of running a search, I gave it a whopping 0 mics).

Damn you wack. I see you overcompensate for your less-than-satisfactory personality and dick size by bitching on the internet under the name King Dick.

    Nah, I’m just playing.

You’re right, I can’t stand not getting the last word. Arguing with stans on the internet makes my life complete.

I’m not going to respond to jay13, because I think anyone with the common sense of a rock will understand why what he’s saying is bullshit.

    Dear Game stans…
I’m not responding to any more comments on this post after this.

Move on and stop caring what dumbass bloggers think about some shitty album.

After all, when was the last time you read a blog that wasn’t hateful?

L.A.X was a great track. Maybe you nigga’s don’t understand, Game dropped his gang bangin bullshit. He’s his own person, not just a remake now. This album proves it. RIP

This album is weak, I would have gave The Documentary (CD) 4.5 stars then Doctors Advocate gets 3.5 and now this album gets a 2. Lets be honest the game isn’t very lyrical. Dukes just hop on his nuts cuz he such a gangsta. I dont care if he’s a gangsta this album is weak. And how many times do I have to hear him……..

    Name Drop
Talk about how fake others are
Talk about how gangsta he is
    Talk about Compton
    Talk about money

Those were pretty much the main points of this album. I have no problem with that being the main point but atleast make it lyrical and get some beats that dont sound the same.

And to whoever said the game is versatile. smh

The only good song was Ya Heard because of Luda, Never Can Say Good-bye, & maybe My Life

  27. August 28, 2008 at 5:59 am

thats all you could say? that what i said was bullshit? hahaha MAN YOU FROM NEBRASKA!!! IM FROM CAL-I-FORN-I-A BITCH!!!!!!! DONT BE MAD BECAUSE WE HAVE SOMEONE OVER HERE REPRESENTING THE MOTHERFUCKING WEST COAST, THE GOLDEN STATE, THE MOTHERFUCKIN BEST STATE IN THE WHOLE MTHERFUCKIN U.S.A.!!! im out… you didnt reply for a reason son!!!! ohh yea and 1 more thing SUUUCK IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha

LAX IS HOT. LIL WAYNE IS WACK, I DON’T KNOW WHY HE WAS INCLUDED ON THIS EFFORT. THE DOPE BOYS IS GONNA JACK UP MY GYM TIME. The Game is one of the hottest rappers on the planet. If only one
track sounded good,I would still purchace 5 copies which I have.
