Nas – Nigger / Untitled Review

(To be officially released Tuesday, July 15th)

This is Nas’ highly anticipated new album, originally titled Nigger, later renamed Untitled after stores refused to sell the album.

QUEENS GET THE MONEY

A plodding, shittily-produced intro similar to “Hope” from the last CD, except with piano in the background and shittier raps. Not a good way to start the album.

YOU CAN’T STOP US NOW

This is basically a combination of “Hold Down the Block” and “Blunt Ashes.” This isn’t that bad, but it’s not memorable, either. I usually skip this one when I listen.

It’s basically rambling with the occasional line or sample obviously thrown in to stir shit up.

BREATHE

About the need to relax once in a while. This could have been improved a lot if he would have sampled that Katt Williams bit – “As a black man in America, you need to be hard, but we all know n—as that’s thugging 24/7. How you gonna gangbang your breakfast, n—a?”

This is skippable, just like the last one. It’s a little too heavy-sounding to be relaxing. It’s pretty stressful and claustrophobic, actaully. Things don’t pick up until the next track.

MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND

The beat on here is pretty tacky, but Nas and Game bring that heat. I think this may be the best Game verse I’ve ever heard, except for maybe “300 Bars N Runnin’.” This also has one of the best choruses on here, delivered by Chris Brown, who actually sounds good.

HERO

This is my shit right now, my jam. Polow Da Don’s on the beat. Yeah, dude from Dipset [UPDATE: My apologies, I didn’t realize I said Polow was from Dipset. lol I was thinking of Duke Da God].

The beat has a Neptunes vibe to it, and Nas spits some ill shit. Don’t sleep on the chorus, though, which is pretty much the same as the last one, but with a chick singing it.

AMERICA

This one isn’t bad – I listen to it – but it could have been a lot better. This is a misstep, but it’s not as shitty as it could have been.

Nas really doesn’t say much on this, and it was a great opportunity he squandered.

SLY FOX

The instant classic where he sends a whole fucking swarm of lyrical bullets through FOX News’ public image, which is pretty shitty to begin with. This is the only song on here besides Hero that I listen to regularly.

TESTIFY

Like a lot of the songs on here, this one is pretty much Nas rambling about nothing in particular and saying a few lines meant to spark controversy.

N.I.G.G.E.R (THE SLAVE & THE MASTER)

This is pretty much the same as the last track. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either.

LOUIS FARRAKHAN

A style similar to Sly Fox, but much less interesting. I rarely listen to this one.

FRIED CHICKEN

A mouthwatering ode to fried chicken that personifies it as a woman. I like hot wings a lot more myself, but every time I hear this, I get hungry for some fried chicken.

God damn I love this song.

PROJECT ROACH

Nas compares black people to roaches. It’s not half as interesting as you would think. In fact, it sucks. If you want a good song where a rapper pretends to be another animal, try “Top Cat” by Slick Rick.

As for the message, eh. It’s not really there. Avoid this song at all costs.

Y’ALL MY NIGGAS

Basically a rehashing of the other shitty songs on here, like “You Can’t Stop Us Now.”

WE’RE NOT ALONE

The chorus is basically about helping your fellow man, but the verses are pretty much Nas rambling again.

BLACK PRESIDENT

A great flip of a 2Pac sample where Nas throws in with Barack Obama. If you support Obama, you’ll probably like this song. It’s a pretty good song in its own right, too.

OVERALL:

This is a pretty big let down, especially considering the two years Nas spent working on it. It sounds like he just went into the booth and freestyled for an hour. There isn’t much of a message on here, nothing groundbreaking or mind blowing.

Download “Sly Fox,” “Fried Chicken,” and “Hero,” then leave it alone.

2/5 Stars

If you want an in-depth review, try Pitchfork, who gave it a just rating (i.e. a bad one).

One shouldn’t turn to blog reviews if one wants details.

    This is a compact review.

As for N.I.G.G.E.R. eh. I found it pretty mediocre. Sue me.

The album will be berated by the ignorant who exmplify the central phenomenon of the album, “nigger”. The track “Nigger” is profoundly expressed and written. As a scholar and poet laureate I can say without a doubt there is a great deal of substance in this album… Peace to the righteous and death to the Imps and pawns of the devil…Niggers

It’s defiantly not the greatest album of 2008, or the greatest NaS album, any NaS fan would know that. Saying NIGGER was the best track is plain wrong, NIGGER kind of sucked musically,(Just a drum/clap machine with some synth)and the lyrics are just him rambling about black people. In my opinion, the best track was Fried Chicken, it was great musically as well as well as lyrically.
